How to Set a Crowdfunding Goal

Start with the smallest version of the project that is still worth delivering. A goal should fund a coherent outcome, not every future idea. Write down what exists when the budget is fully spent and what is deliberately outside scope.

Estimate production, packaging, labor, software, contractors, taxes, shipping support and a contingency. Reward costs need to include fulfillment, not only manufacturing. Include platform and payment processing fees so the amount left after fees can still fund the plan.

• Fixed costs: prototypes, tooling, setup and one-time professional work.
• Variable costs: each reward, package, label and delivery allowance.
• Risk allowance: replacements, price movement and ordinary mistakes.

On an all-or-nothing platform, the goal is the threshold that determines whether funds are collected. On a flexible platform such as Backed, the goal communicates ambition and progress but successful backing proceeds are not conditional on reaching it.

That difference changes planning, but not the need for honesty. If a partial amount only funds research rather than delivery, say so clearly.

Calculate how many likely backers are needed at a realistic average amount. If that number is far larger than the audience you can reach, reduce scope, build the audience first or find another source for part of the budget.

Finally, ask someone familiar with production to challenge your assumptions. The best goal is defensible both to supporters and to the person responsible for delivery.
